Description

As a speech pathologist you will recognise the importance of communication and swallowing as activities that enable people to fully participate in their daily lives. You will assist individuals, groups, families, and communities with speech, language, voice, and fluency concerns; and with multiple modes of communication including speaking, writing, sign, non-verbal cues, and technology-based communication aids. You may also provide advice on swallowing, feeding, and mealtime concerns. You may work as a sole practitioner or in transdisciplinary, interdisciplinary, or multidisciplinary contexts. Your studies will encompass both theoretical perspectives and professional practice experiences.

All costs are calculated using current rates and are based on a full-time study load of 40 credit points (normally 4 units) per semester.

Essential requirements for admission

An applicant must also comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.

1.1 To be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, an applicant must have completed the following prerequisites at year 12 level, or equivalent:

New South Wales

  • Prerequisites: English (Advanced) or English (Standard) (Band 4) or English as a Second Language (Band 4); plus at least one of biology, chemistry, physics, or personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE).

Queensland

  • Prerequisites: English (4, SA) and at least one of biology, chemistry, physics, health education or physical education (4, SA).

Victoria

  • Prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English; and a study score of at least 25 in one of biology, chemistry, physics, health and human development, or physical education.

International students need to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements as defined in the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.

1.2 English Proficiency requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English must have either:

  1. successfully completed at least two full-time years of study in secondary; or
  2. higher education where the medium of study was English; or
  3. demonstrated their English proficiency – IELTS Overall Score: 7.0
  4. Individual score of 6.5 in all tests.

Adjustment Factors which may improve your Selection Rank

If you have a Selection Rank but it's not enough for this course

  • Complete a VET qualification such as an AQF Diploma or Advanced Diploma (Qld only)
  • Commence another ACU undergraduate degree and successfully complete at least one full-time year (8 units or 80 cp) of study, then apply for internal transfer to this course. A new Selection Rank will be calculated from your results in your ACU units which will be compared with the entry score required for this course. Note - you will need to achieve higher than a pass grade for your studies to achieve the entry score required for this course.

Important Note on Fees

The Tuition fees quoted above are for commencing students in the current year who undertake a normal full-time load. The Unit Fee is based on a 10cp unit. Fees are reviewed annually.

Tuition fees for continuing students may increase by up to 3 percent each year for the minimum duration of the course as provided on your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE). Students who continue to study beyond the minimum duration will have the relevant annual commencing rate applied to their fees for subsequent study periods.
