Australian Catholic University (ACU) College and Cabrini have collaborated in an industry-based partnership to promote and educate enrolled nurses through an 18-month full-time Diploma of Nursing. This collaboration is known as ACCENT (ACU College and Cabrini Educating Nurses Together) and combines excellent learning facilities with extensive practical experience. ACU College will provide a high-quality teaching and learning environment for all theory and simulation learning at the ACU Melbourne Campus in Fitzroy. Cabrini will then invite successful applicants to complete all 400 hours of practical clinical placement at their facilities.

This qualification will equip you with the essential nursing knowledge and skills that are required for eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia through AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) as an enrolled nurse working under the supervision of a registered nurse. You will develop an appreciation for evidence-based nursing practice and will strengthen your clinical decision-making and reflective skills, your caring behaviours, and empathy for others across a range of health care settings and multidisciplinary teams.

ACCENT allows you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture of Cabrini by participating in guest lectures and tutorials that will assist you in becoming familiar with Cabrini’s clinical policies, guidelines and systems. These are designed to help you transition from a student to enrolled nurse much more easily.

  • Year 12 or equivalent including English

English language skills entry requirements

You must be able to demonstrate that you meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s (NMBA) English language skills registration standard as a mandatory requirement for enrolment in this course.

Proof of this English language competency can be achieved in these three ways:

  1. Primary language pathway

    Your primary language is English and you have undertaken and satisfactorily completed at least six years of primary and secondary education, including at least two years between Years 7 and 12. Your supporting qualification relevant for this pathway was taught and assessed solely in English in a NMBA recognised country, which includes:

    • Australia
    • New Zealand
    • United Kingdom
    • Republic of Ireland
    • Canada
    • South Africa
    • United States of America

  2. Extended education pathway

    You have undertaken and satisfactorily completed five years (full-time equivalent) of education taught and assessed in English in any of the NMBA-recognised countries listed above. You must demonstrate evidence that at least one full-time equivalent year of this study (inclusive within these five years) was devoted towards your vocational qualification.

    The five years may include three and half (3.5) years (full-time equivalent) of the following qualification in one of recognised countries:

    • vocational and secondary education taught and assessed in English; or
    • tertiary and vocational education taught and assessed in English; or
    • combined tertiary, secondary and vocational education taught and assessed in English; or
    • tertiary education taught and assessed in English; and

    The completion of HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing from ACU for one and a half (1.5) years.

  3. English language test pathway

    You have achieved the required scores in one of the approved English language tests as specified in the NMBA’s English language skills registration standard prior to acceptance of offer.

ACU College entrance test

  • You will be required to sit a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) test at ACU College. You must attain at least Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Level 4 in reading, writing, learning, and oral communication and ACSF Level 3 in numeracy for course entry.
  • You will be requested to attend an interview on the same day as the ACU College test.
  • Please refer to the inherent requirements that are needed to achieve the core learning outcomes of the course.

Professional Experience Placement (PEP) requirements

ACU College registers you as a student nurse with AHPRA for you to complete 400 hours of PEP. Other mandatory requirements for PEP include:

  • a declaration of your health and immunisation status
  • national Police Records Check
  • Working with Children Check
  • you must be at least 18 years of age.

PEP occurs across three stages in the course. Stage 1 occurs in an aged-care environment. You will be consolidating your communication skills and planning care strategies appropriate to the person’s physical and mental health condition in consultation with a registered nurse.

Stage 2 takes place in a rehabilitation setting where you will accurately collect, interpret, utilise, monitor and report information regarding the health and functional status of the person. You will be implementing admission and discharge procedures as per organisational policies and administering oral medications.

In Stage 3 you will work in an acute care setting. Here you will continue to consolidate the skills undertaken in stages 1 and 2. You will now have learned more complex clinical skills and applied nursing knowledge. There is an expectation that you will conduct yourself as an independent practitioner, under the full supervision of an RN. You will have developed the skills of prioritising your workload and managing stressors in the professional manner of a graduate enrolled nurse.

Career pathways

Possible career paths include:

  • working as an enrolled nurse in an acute hospital, mental health, aged care, or community setting
  • registration with AHPRA on successful completion of the course
  • pathway into Bachelor of Nursing to become a registered nurse.

For all ENN units you must provide evidence of undertaking 'enrolled nurse work' as an enrolled nurse or enrolled nurse student.

Students may be offered a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) in the Bachelor of Nursing at ACU if they perform well in all Diploma of Nursing units. Diploma of Nursing graduates at ACU who gain entry to the Bachelor of Nursing will also receive credit points.

Tuition fees and funding

In Victoria the training is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding for eligible candidates. Please refer to the Department of Education and Training website for funding eligibility in Victoria.

VET Student Loans are available for eligible students. Please refer to our  fees page for eligibility criteria. VET Student Loans (VSL) gives rise to a HELP debt that continues to be a debt due to the Commonwealth until it is repaid.
