ACU’s Master of Public Health (MPH) program equips graduates with specialised knowledge, understanding and skills in public health to improve and advance population health and well-being. ACU’s MPH prepares graduates to practice with a community, national or global focus, and with an ethical, social justice perspective.

ACU’s MPH allows students to develop advanced and specialised knowledge across the discipline of public health, with an emphasis on evidence-based practice, rigorous intellectual inquiry, innovation and thought leadership, and effective communication and advocacy skills.

ACU’s MPH curriculum was designed around the Foundation Competencies for MPH Graduates in Australia and the requirements of the Australian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (for medical practitioners specialising in public health). Other international competency and practice standards and competency frameworks have also informed ACU’s curriculum design.

A uniquely ACU specialisation, Global Health & Advocacy, is available to MPH students. Global health is an increasingly important area for public health practitioners, and the ACU specialisation couples knowledge of global health, sustainable development, food security and humanitarian assistance with skills in advocacy. This specialisation aims to equip students with the ability to not only implement change, but to influence change in the first place through advocacy.

Students may choose to complete their MPH with specialisation through a Research Pathway (undertaking additional research training and completion of a minor thesis) or a Capstone Pathway (involving a capstone experience, such as a practice-based project).

Important Note on Fees

All costs are calculated using current rates and are based on a full-time study load of 40 credit points (normally 4 units) per semester.

A student’s annual fee may vary in accordance with:

  • the number of units studied per semester;
  • the choice of major or specialisation; and
  • elective units.

The University reviews fees annually.

A 10% rebate on fees will be offered to domestic ACU graduates (from any faculty) enrolling in full fee-paying postgraduate studies in the Faculty of Health Sciences to commence studying in 2015 and until further notice. Conditions apply.

Essential requirements for admission

An applicant must also comply with the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.

International students need to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements as defined in the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.

To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have:

  1. An Bachelor degree (or higher) in health or related discipline;
    and
  2. Either:
    1. A minimum grade point average of 5.5 (on the ACU seven point scale) in the health degree in point 1, and a letter demonstrating commitment to public health to the satisfaction of the course coordinator; OR
    2. Have successfully completed a Graduate Diploma in Public Health; OR
    3. A minimum of two years professional experience in health (or related field), including Honours or other postgraduate study in health; OR
    4. Suitable practical experience in public health, global health or humanitarian assistance to the satisfaction of the course coordinator.

According to a recent public health workforce study, these opportunities are typically within the public or not-for-profit sector; however, one-quarter of MPH graduates are employed in the private sector.

Approximately half of all MPH graduates are employed within the health sector, with others finding opportunities within education, government and services sectors.

Managerial, analytical and program-/project-based roles are common destinations for MPH graduates. For many health practitioners, particularly medical practitioners or registered nurses, an MPH degree expands their career opportunities within their existing field (eg different roles or modes of practice).

English language requirements

Applicants require an academic IELTS minimum overall score of 6.5 (with a minimum score of 6.0 in all bands), or an equivalent acceptable test score as outlined in the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy (Schedule 3).

Important Note on Fees

The Tuition fees quoted above are for commencing students in the current year who undertake a normal full-time load. The Unit Fee is based on a 10cp unit. Fees are reviewed annually.

Tuition fees for continuing students may increase by up to 3 percent each year for the minimum duration of the course as provided on your electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCOE). Students who continue to study beyond the minimum duration will have the relevant annual commencing rate applied to their fees for subsequent study periods.
